BELFAST, Maine — The woman accused of child endangerment after she was allegedly too drunk and high to notice when the family Rottweiler mauled her 7-month-old daughter to death was released from jail Monday after her husband paid her $1,000 cash bail.

The criminal trial for Katrina Mitchell, 29, of Frankfort is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, according to documents filed in Belfast District Court.

Mitchell pleaded not guilty Friday to the charge of endangering the welfare of a child during a videoconference in Belfast District Court from Two Bridges Regional Jail, where she was held after her arrest last Wednesday night.

According to her bail conditions, Mitchell must not use alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs and must submit at any time to searches of her person, vehicle or residence and to chemical tests to prove she’s not using.

Police are alleging that Mitchell was alone in her Town Hill Road home with baby Annabelle and her son Jett, who turns 3 years old on July 19, during the afternoon of April 12. She started drinking beer and possibly vodka about 3 p.m. that day, according to an affidavit written by Maine State Police Detective Adam Kelley.

Later that night, tests showed that Mitchell’s blood alcohol level was about .30, almost four times the legal driving limit, the affidavit indicated. She also tested positive for THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.

Mitchell told police that she had been napping on the couch with the baby at the other end.

When she woke up at about 7 p.m., the baby was dead on the floor, with claw marks and possibly bite marks from an attack by Hannibal, the family dog.

When her husband, John Mitchell, returned home from work after learning that his daughter was dead, he asked police to shoot the dog. He also allegedly told police that his wife has a drinking problem and had promised him not to drink unless he was around.
