Rockland Rotary bestows Person of the Year Award

ROCKPORT — Rich Mazurek has always been a hard athlete to defend against, but he was caught off guard last week by Rockland Rotary. Mazurek was named the Community Person of the Year by Rockland Rotary on July 6 at the Samoset Resort.

Mazurek is used to receiving awards for his athletic achievements, but it was his work for others that drew the attention of Rockland Rotary. Mazurek and his wife, Jen, were instrumental in the construction of the new George C. Hall softball field in Rockland.

For the past 10 years, Mazurek has been involved with Rockland Little League both as a coach and president of the league. The project, 10 years in planning and four years in construction and fundraising phases, was completed this spring in time for opening day thanks to the many volunteers and donations from the community, Mazurek said. The project had an estimated cost of $100,000.

The award was presented at the regular weekly meeting at the club. “Rich was supposed to receive the award on June 29 at our annual change of command dinner,” said Doug Curtis Jr., the Rotary president. “At the last minute, he got sick and required hospitalization. Fortunately, he is fine now and we are happy to honor him.”

The Community Person of the Year Award goes to a person who is not a Rotarian but represents the Rotary ideals of Service Above Self.

Rockland Rotary has sponsored a Little League team in Rockland for more than 45 years, according to Curtis. “We were very happy to help out,” Curtis said. “Rotary built the dugouts for the field, and we could not be more proud of what our community has accomplished with Rich’s guidance.”

Mazurek is well-known on the basketball court and the baseball diamond. He was a 1,000-point scorer for the Tigers and is the all time homerun leader with 17 during his time at Rockland District High School. He is a member of the Midcoast and Husson College halls of fame. He is the son of Maine state Rep. Ed and Mary Ellen Mazurek.
