BANGOR, Maine — Time Warner Cable has started work on a new, underground fiber-optic network in downtown Bangor to connect residents and business owners to the company’s advanced video, broadband and digital phone products.

The $1 million project is funded by Time Warner Cable and is scheduled for completion this fall.

Eastwood Contractors Inc. of Brewer is the primary contractor for the expansion. The project includes the installation of nearly a mile of underground conduit along Harlow Street, Franklin Street, a portion of Park Street, Exchange Street and Hancock Street.

In all, Time Warner Cable plans to install more than 4 miles of underground and aerial cable to service downtown Bangor with the potential to serve hundreds of residential and commercial customers with the company’s advanced services.

“I also want to thank the City of Bangor for its help during the planning process for this project,” said Paul S. Schonewolf, Time Warner Cable’s area vice president for New England. “It’s a tremendous logistical undertaking to plan an underground project, particularly in a downtown area. The city has done everything possible to make the process simple and easy, and we’re very excited to get this project under way.”

Since 2006, Time Warner Cable has invested more than $260 million in capital in new technology and broadband infrastructure in Maine, according to a news release.
