SOUTH THOMASTON, Maine — The Maine Warden Service is investigating whether alcohol was involved in a Saturday afternoon all-terrain vehicle accident that caused a Massachusetts man to be hospitalized.

Robert Tierney, 55, of Halifax, Mass., was driving a Yamaha ATV on Atlantic Quarry Road in the village of Spruce Head at about 5:30 p.m. when he hit a tree and was injured, according to Edith Smith of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

“It does appear he was speeding out of the driveway of the house he was visiting,” Smith said.

Tierney was not wearing his helmet and his injuries were deemed serious, but not life-threatening. He was taken to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport for evaluation.

She said the accident is being investigated as a possible alcohol-related incident.

A hospital official said Sunday afternoon that Tierney had been treated and released.
