VERONA ISLAND — Three very hot, tired but happy and smiling young men stopped at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 17, in the middle of the bridge between Bucksport and Verona Island to take photos of Fort Knox, across the river in Prospect, before pausing to rest in the shade on the island side and report that they had surpassed their fundraising goal of $1,000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Connor Reeves, Ethan Johnson and Jacob Weese, friends since they entered first grade in the Skowhegan school system, are enjoying their “last hurrah” before their senior year, riding their longboards for a cause from Ellsworth to Old Orchard Beach.

The teens are making the trip not only to raise funds for breast cancer research, but also because Reeves will be attending Fryeburg Academy next year while his buddies complete their senior year at SHS.

The trio, who go by the team name “Boarding for Boobies,” left at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 17, and had made it to Verona Island by 2 p.m., eagerly anticipating a welcome by supporters midafternoon, further along Route 1 in Stockton Springs.

Reeves reported the team members, who were sporting bright pink “Boarding for Boobies” towels on their backpacks, had already raised $2,050 for the Komen Foundation, thus assuring them a most successful venture when they complete their trip, which is expected to be Wednesday, July 20, in Old Orchard Beach.

You can follow their progress by going to Facebook and typing in “Boarding for Boobies.”

The team is registered with the Passionately Pink Program through the Susan G. Komen Maine Affiliate, and more information is available about that program at komenmaine.org, clicking on Get Involved, Fundraising for Komen and selecting Passionately Pink.

To support this fundraiser, checks can be made payable to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and mailed to Connor Reeves, 90 Robin Court, Skowhegan 04976.
