Medical examiner probing Newport man’s cause of death

NEWPORT, Maine — The state medical examiner’s office is investigating the cause of death for a Newport man found Wednesday but likely won’t conclude the probe for several months.

Steven Crouch, 47, was found dead in his bedroom at 53 Downwind Blvd. at about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to Newport police Chief Leonard Macdaid. Crouch’s body was found by his girlfriend, who called 911. According to Macdaid, there was no sign of foul play.

“It didn’t look suspicious,” said Macdaid. “We’re not really sure what happened.”

Macdaid said Crouch was not under a doctor’s care for any known medical condition. The body was sent to the medical examiner’s office, which is routine practice when people younger than age 55 are found deceased. Macdaid said his department had never crossed paths with Crouch.

A spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office said an autopsy has been done, but that more testing would take “several months” to complete.

“His cause of death is pending further study,” said the spokeswoman.
