Complaint about paintball vandalism ends up blamed on pooping birds

BAR HARBOR, Maine — An incident reported to local police last week started out as a suspected act of vandalism but ended up as just an act of nature.

When a hotel employee contacted police on July 6, it was to report that a violent person may have repeatedly fired a paintball gun at a hotel guest’s vehicle in the parking lot, according to an incident report filed with the Bar Harbor Police Department.

Police officer Eric McLaughlin went to the Eden Street hotel and determined that the vehicle had not been hit by human vandals, however.

The officer noted in his police report that the discoloration was not caused by paintballs, but by “a large amount of bird waste.”

Further information about what may have contributed to the guano placement was unavailable Wednesday. Mclaughlin was not on duty and so was unavailable for comment, according to a police dispatcher.
