‘Fresh paint’ art auction to benefit Blue Hill library

ELLSWORTH, Maine — Appreciators of Maine landscape paintings will have their choice this Saturday of several dozen works so fresh that some likely will be wet to the touch.

Roughly 60 artists will fan out across Blue Hill peninsula Saturday morning to create paintings or sketches that will be auctioned off hours later to benefit the Blue Hill Public Library.

The first-ever “Paint the Peninsula” event will be held Saturday morning, followed by a silent auction and reception at the library from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Event co-chairwoman Margret Baldwin of Surry said they sent out roughly 45 invitations to artists who might be willing to share their talents for a good cause. As of Tuesday, the number who had signed on was approaching 60 and still climbing.

“People kept coming and asking if they could be part of it,” said Baldwin, an artist herself who taught art for 25 years at schools in Blue Hill and Surry. “It’s been wonderful.”

The fundraiser is modeled after similar events held in coastal Maine and elsewhere. Participating artists have pledged to contribute at least 50 percent of the proceeds from the silent auction to Blue Hill Public Library, which is an independent, nonprofit organization.

Although artists can set a reserve price for their work, event co-chairman and library board member Steve Collier said he believes there will be a broad range of prices.

“All of the artists seem to be very excited about it,” said Collier, who suggested the event after hearing about another “fresh paint” fundraiser.

The artwork — some still wet to the touch — will be on display at the Blue Hill library beginning at 4:30 p.m. Individuals attending the free reception will be able to bid on the artwork until 6:30 p.m.
