July wildlife

Old Town Photographer Dave Small has been exploring close to home for the past several weeks and his forays have been productive and entertaining. While on a recent bike ride and reflecting on the flora and fauna he’s been seeing in backyards, box store parking lots, beside roadways, in small wood lots and undeveloped parcels, he’s been able to capture nature through his lens and share it with BDN readers. this week’s offerings include a variety ranging from soon-to-be hatched, to newborn to adult. Small’s favorite this week is the killdeer which feigns injury and attempts to lead predators away from its’ nest site. Nests are built in the open and hidden by camouflage. After observing this killdeer’s behavior, Small said, “I began, very carefully looking for the nest. Not far from the trail, I located and photographed it. Since then I’ve returned hoping to find chicks. Not yet! But soon I hope.” Enjoy.
