BANGOR, Maine — A comment about the tidiness of an Essex Street apartment Monday afternoon apparently caused the renter to get mad enough to stab the man hired to collect his rent, Sgt. Paul Edwards said Tuesday.

Edward Myshrall, 52, was charged with felony aggravated assault and disorderly conduct after the 4 p.m. fight in his apartment, which occurred when a property maintenance person for the apartment building stopped by to collect rent, the sergeant said.

“The maintenance person stated that when he entered Myshrall’s apartment to ask for the rent, he made a comment about how messy his apartment was,” Edwards said. “At that point, Myshrall took a swing at the victim … which he blocked with his hand.”

The 53-year-old victim soon realized that his hand was bleeding and that Myshrall had a knife in his hand, the sergeant said. “The victim punched Myshrall and fled the apartment.”

As Officer Kevin Haefele and additional backup officers finished their interviews with witnesses, Myshrall left the apartment house and became upset when he learned he would be going to jail, which led to an additional charge of failing to submit to arrest, Edwards said.

The victim refused medical care saying he would get treatment on his own.

Myshrall was taken to Penobscot County Jail. If convicted, faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine for the aggravated assault charge. (Nok-Noi Ricker/BDN)
