MONTPELIER, Vt. — An unknown number of FairPoint Communications customers in northern New England are unable to rely on their Internet or voicemail because of a power outage outside the company’s offices in Manchester, N.H.
Jim Porter of the Vermont Department of Public Service told The Associated Press that the Monday afternoon outage caused a surge that blew out a power panel before the system could be switched to a backup generator.
FairPoint spokewoman Sabina Haskell said Internet and voicemail are affected in parts of Maine and Vermont.
Among the consumers affected: the state of Vermont. Porter says he has not been able to get any voicemails on his office phone since the outage hit.
