Pet calendar fundraiser
Time is running out to get a photo of your beloved pet in the Humane Society of Knox County’s
2012 Pet Calendar. You only have until Aug. 1 for your furry, feathered, scaly or finned friends to be featured in the calendar, and spaces are going fast. There are several opportunities to get your pet’s photo in the calendar.
• Showcase your beloved pet on the front cover. Bid today to secure this coveted spot on the HSKC’s first annual calendar fundraiser. Bidding starts at $300.
• Choose a glamour shot and have the pleasure of seeing your pet’s full page-sized photo for a whole month. $200.
• Also available and very affordable are the Tail Wagger Shots priced at $35, which feature a photo on a date square.
Each entrant receives a complimentary calendar to admire and show off to friends and
family. Better yet, order extra ones to give as gifts. Each additional calendar is only $10.
Calendars go on sale Oct. 1. All proceeds from the sale of the calendar will go toward
caring for the 1,200-plus homeless and needy animals that come through the shelter each year.

Co-op trip to gardens
BELFAST — On Saturday, July 30, the Belfast Co-op is hosting a trip to Avena Botanicals two-acre organic, biodynamic gardens in Rockport. Transportation will be provided by Waldo CAP, departing from the Belfast Co-op at 9 a.m. and returning by 1 p.m. Seating is limited; pre-registration is required. The cost is $10, which covers transportation expenses. The tour includes a medicinal herb garden walk and talk hosted by Avena Botanicals owner, herbalist Deb Soule. More than 125 common and unusual medicinal herbs grow in Avena’s gardens. Intermingled with the herbs is a variety of flowering trees and annual and perennial flowers that feed pollinators.
You can sign-up at any register at the Co-op or by phone, 338-2352, with a credit or debit card. Avena Botanicals Herbal Apothecary is adjacent to the medicinal herb gardens. You may purchase herbal remedies in the shop after touring the gardens. Tea and cookies will be served. If you would like, bring a snack or lunch to eat on the bus ride home. Library book sale
The Friends of Rockport Public Library will hold its “42nd Edition” annual book sale on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 14-16. The sale will be held at the Midcoast Recreation Center on Route 90 in West Rockport. As always, thousands of quality books and related literary materials will be available at reasonable prices.
On Thursday, July 14, the sale will kick off with a Friends’ Sale from 5 to 7 p.m. Everyone is extended an invitation to become a Friend of the Rockport Library no matter where you live. A year’s membership is $10 for individuals, $15 for families, and $25 for patrons and businesses.
With your new membership, you can preview the sale Thursday and have first selection of the books: 15 books for individuals and 30 books for other membership categories. Membership renewals can be paid at the library or at the book sale.
The Friends prefer dues to be paid by check, if possible. Also, remember that you can expedite the process of paying for your purchased books at the book sale if you have previously paid your dues.
On Friday, July 15, the sale will open at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. On Saturday, July 16, the sale will re-open at 8:30 a.m. and go until noon. After a short break, the popular “$5 Box O’ Books” sale starts at 1 p.m. and goes until 2 p.m., when all the remaining books are yours for free
In addition to books, devotees of the library will be providing homemade treats during both the Thursday and Friday sale periods. Call the library if you would like to donate a baked good.
The funds raised are donated directly to the Rockport Public Library and are used for purchasing new books, program materials, multimedia resources, children’s programs and equipment for the library. In the past three years alone, the Friends of Rockport Public Library have donated in excess of $25,000 in money and goods and services to the library.

World Fair exhibit
The Searsport Historical Society has announced that the display for the weekend of July 16-17 will be World Fair memorabilia from 1851 to 1982. The best way to showcase new inventions and products was at the World Fair, starting in London in 1851. Fairs were held in France and North America until the 1980s. This display contains items such as maps, souvenirs, tickets, tokens, coins and books. Some of the greatest fairs were the 1876 Philadelphia fair, the 1889 Paris fair, the 1892-1893 Chicago fair, the 1904 St. Louis fair and the 1939-40 New York fair.
This display will be held at the Crary/Carlon/Coleman House, headquarters of the Searsport Historical Society, located on the Sears Island Road, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 16, and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Historical society celebration
The Thorndike Historical Society was organized July 10, 1991 with 10 members. Over the years, the group has erected landmark road signs, bought a replica of the Boston cane to present to the oldest citizen, interviewed senior citizens, gathered and preserved history of the town, and was caretaker of the old hearse from 1995 to 2009.
On July 23, the society will celebrate its 20th anniversary 10 a.m-2 p.m. at the Thorndike Auction Hall. There will be demonstrations by local craftspeople, speakers, exhibits and entertainment by Dale Hustus. Several other local societies have been invited to set up displays. Refreshments will be on sale.
Everyone is invited to come and learn about their history. Admission is free.
The Union Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Pie Social will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, July 15, on the Union Common. Come for dinner and enjoy hamburgers and hot dogs with cold beverages before completing your meal with dessert from a broad selection of homemade pies donated by local bakers.
Musical entertainment will be provided by Paddy Mills, whose singing and guitar playing has been described as rural-contemporary-folk-groove. In addition, the Chamber will be holding a free drawing for two new bicycles during the pie social. The winners of the drawings — one boy and one girl — must be present to win.
The net income from this event goes to support the Union Area Chamber’s Scholarship & Grant fund. The fund assists students in the Chamber’s service area, which consists of Appleton, Hope, Union, Waldoboro, Warren and Washington. It is available to any elementary, junior high, high school or non-traditional student that lives within the service area to pursue education or projects that relate to business, entrepreneurship or leadership. Scholarships of up to $250 may be awarded, with a maximum to be determined annually based on the funds available. Awards will be given based upon merit and/or need. The Winterport Woman’s Club is accepting listings for its next Community Calendar.
WWC has offered the Community Calendar for more than 50 years, and it is one of the fundraisers for the club, which helps support Hampden Academy scholarships and causes throughout Winterport.
The calendar includes many local businesses’ ads with phone numbers, so it is a great resource for community members.
Those who would like to list their own or others’ birthdays, anniversaries, memorials and veteran notations on the calendar may email details to Mary Lester at email@example.com.

Historic New England will offer special twilight tours of the Nickels-Sortwell House at 5 and 6 p.m. Thursday, July 21. Admission is $10 for Historic New England members and $15 for nonmembers. Built in 1807 at the peak of Wiscasset’s prosperity by Captain William Nickels, a wealthy sea captain, Nickels-Sortwell House is the finest example of high Federal style architecture north of Portsmouth. Run as an inn after his death for many years under multiple owners, the house was lovingly restored in the Colonial Revival style by the Sortwell family of Cambridge, Mass., after it was purchased in 1899. The family enjoyed the mansion as a summer house and private residence until 1956. The Nickels-Sortwell House is located at 121 Main St. (the corner of Federal Street and Route 1). Visitors will see this beautiful mansion at a very special time of day and, for the first time in 50 years, see additional rooms that offer a view into how the Sortwell family used the house as a summer home.
