NEWPORT, Maine — The Newport Cultural Center aims to entertain music lovers of all ages Thursday with its inaugural outdoor concert.

The Maine Squeeze Accordion Ensemble from Portland will bring its high-energy, multicultural show to the grassy area behind Newport Cultural Center, which is located on Main Street in Newport.

Children’s librarian Joanne Elwell said she organized the event with the help of the Friends of the Library at the Newport Cultural Center after hearing from parents that they wanted an event scheduled during the evening hours. Thursday’s performance is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Elwell said she is working hard to publicize the event, which was previously promoted for the wrong day.

The Maine Squeeze Accordion Ensemble specializes in eclectic music from around the word, ranging from waltzes to zydeco, as well as original tunes. The band has played at venues all over Maine, according to its website, www.mainesqueeze.com.

Elwell said that though the concert was envisioned for children, people of all ages will enjoy it.

“They’re a lot of fun,” said Elwell of the band. “They go out amongst the crowd and play a lot of music from different countries and different cultures. I just wanted to try this one time to see how an evening event would go.”

Participants are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs. Admission is free, though a donation of a nonperishable food item to benefit the Newport Food Bank is recommended.

Thursday’s concert is in keeping with the library’s summer reading program theme of “One World, Many Stories.” The series of events will continue on Thursday, July 21, with musician and storyteller Jennifer Armstrong and Thursday, July 28, with author Angeli Perrow, author of the recent book “Many Hands: A Penobscot Indian Story.” Both of those events kick off at 1 p.m.
