Tools for School

Penquis, Blueberry Broadcasting, Mike and Mike from Kiss 94.5 FM and Dunkin’ Donuts have joined efforts once again to launch the Tools for School Drive. This year the goal is to ensure that children in the Penquis service area have a backpack for the new school year.

The Tools for School Backpack campaign will work with Manna Ministries to help ensure that children also get needed school supplies to fill the backpack. Penquis and Manna will combine business and community resources to equip students with the tools they need to succeed in school.

Beginning Aug. 1, Families in need of school supplies may all Manna Ministries at 990-2870. Families in need of a backpack for their child or children can register at http://www.penquis.org by clicking on Tools For School Backpack Registration. Those who cannot register online may call Penquis at 973-3500 or 800-215-4942.

Penquis will focus on providing children with a backpack, and Manna Ministries will provide the school supplies. Businesses, churches, civic organizations and individuals are encouraged to join these efforts.

Chess camp

Bangor Parks and Recreation will offer chess camp for students entering grades one through six, beginner to intermediate players, 9-11 a.m. Monday through Friday, July 25-29.

The camp will be presented by Ed Rudnicki, who has been teaching chess for seven years. He will be assisted by Paul Rudnicki, the 75th-highest-rated player in Maine, with a United States Chess Federation rating of 1375.
