Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft to celebrate fifth anniversary

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — It has become what everyone had hoped it would become, a gem.

The historic Center Theatre has become the center for the community: it has become a showplace for local talent and not-so-local talent, a place to see blockbuster movies and a place for special events.

“It really has matched the vision that I and a lot of the founding board members had,” former executive director Patrick Myers said recently. That vision was sparked by some local people around a kitchen table who didn’t want the theater going the way of the historic Blethen House, which was demolished, he said.

This summer is the fifth anniversary of the grand reopening of the theater, which occurred in August 2006. Myers, who served as executive director for six years before leaving late last year for a position at the Piscataquis Regional YMCA, is heading up a gala event at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 30, to celebrate the milestone.

At that time, the theater will present a two-hour long show with scenes and retrospectives of shows that were held at the theater over the last five years. Tracey Walls will reprise her role as Patsy Cline in the show “Always Patsy Cline” that was held several years ago. In addition, there will be scenes and songs from “Annie,” a short, family-friendly excerpt from “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and a tribute to “A Christmas Carol.”

Since the children’s drama camp was the theater’s first program having started 12 years ago, long before the facility reopened, it too will contribute a short scene and song. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, and $10 for theater members.

The celebration is in appreciation of everyone who has contributed time, money and expertise to make the theatre what it is, according to Myers.

This event will be followed at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, by a special performance by Judy Collins, legendary singer-songwriter. Tickets for this show range from $25-$75. The $75 ticket allows the holder to attend a post show to meet and greet Collins. Tickets must be purchased in the box office or by phone at 564-8943.

“Certainly we all think it’s a triumph, a little nonprofit theater in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, has been this much of a success,” Myers said. “The fact that all that has happened even with the economic challenges and all the problems inherent in running a small business is remarkable and wonderful. It’s something I’m glad we’re able to celebrate.”
