Pittsfield man walks away from serious crash, and into a jail cell

CORINNA, Maine — A Pittsfield man walked away from a car accident and into a jail cell early Saturday morning after crashing a stolen car into a telephone pole.

Danny Adams, 20, remained Sunday at the Penobscot County Jail charged with operating after revocation, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, aggravated criminal mischief in connection with the accident.

In addition, he was charged in Somerset County with unauthorized use of vehicle for allegedly stealing the 1996 Toyota Camry from a Pittsfield home about 9:30 p.m. Friday, according to Sgt. William Sheehan of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.

Adams was traveling at a high rate of speed on Route 7 in Corinna toward Newport about 3:45 a.m. Saturday when he lost control of the car and struck a telephone pole in front of the Berg Sportswear building, Sheehan said Sunday. The car toppled the pole and car broke in half.

“The front of the car wound up between 30 and 40 feet from rear,” he said.

The accident was reported by a passerby who said the driver had run into the woods.

The Maine State Police brought a K-9 dog, the sergeant said, but the suspect was not located. About 8:45 a.m., as police were clearing the scene, a man was spotted walking out of the woods, but ran back into the trees when he was approached by a deputy, Sheehan said. The dog located Adams, who surrendered, during a second search.

Adams was taken to the jail after being treated Saturday for minor facial lacerations and released from Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield.

He is expected to make his first court appearance Monday at the Penobscot Judicial Center.

Adams could face addition charges if blood tests show he was under the influence of intoxicants while driving.

This most likely is not the first time Adams has crashed a stolen car. In February 2010, a 19-year-old Danny Adams from Pittsfield reportedly crashed a stolen blue Ford van in Newport. He and his 17-year-old passenger ran from the scene of that accident, according to a previously published report.

The outcome of charges filed in that case were not available Sunday.
