AUGUSTA, Maine — Voter advocates pressing to restore election-day voter registration in Maine are kicking off a referendum drive.
Signature gathering kicks off Friday in Bangor, Lewiston and Portland. The coalition aiming to repeal the law needs to gather more than 57,000 signatures by Aug. 8.
The new law requires people to register to vote at least 48 hours before Election Day. The idea was to ease the burden of last-minute registrations on town clerks.
Coalition members include the Maine Civil Liberties Union, Maine League of Conservation Voters, League of Women Voters of Maine, Maine AFL-CIO, Maine People’s Alliance, EqualityMaine, Maine Education Association and Homeless Voices for Justice.
