PORTLAND, Maine — A 23-year-old man is going to prison for three years after pleading guilty to being the getaway driver after a fatal shooting in Portland.

Moses Okot pleaded guilty Thursday to felony murder for his role in the death of 24-year-old Serge Mulongo. In exchange for the plea, a more serious murder charge was dropped.

Police say that on Feb. 10, 2010, Mulongo was shot six times at close range by 25-year-old Daudoit Butsitsi while leaving his Portland apartment building.

The Portland Press Herald says Mulongo, Okot and Butsitsi had been involved in a series of altercations before the shooting.

Okot will get credit for the 16 months he has spent in jail awaiting trial.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin Friday in Butsitsi’s trial.
