PORTLAND, Maine — A man shot by police after he allegedly drove his car toward two officers in April in Portland intends to sue for excessive force.

Lawyers for Jonathan Mitchell of Bangor say a slow-motion video shows he wasn’t threatening officers when one of them fired twice. Both bullets hit Mitchell, who survived.

Police chased Mitchell in response to reports that he had broken into his ex-wife’s apartment in Portland. Mitchell pulled over on a dead-end street, but sped away as officers approached. He’s jailed on charges of criminal trespass, failure to stop for an officer and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.

BethAnne Poliquin, legal counsel for the Police Department, said people shouldn’t judge the officers based on slow-motion video. She says life doesn’t move in slow motion.
