Alert neighbor helps Lincoln police charge burglary suspects

By Nick Sambides Jr., BDN Staff

LINCOLN, Maine — An alert neighbor’s 911 call helped police summon three suspects on attempted burglary charges after an officer found them in a new car lot earlier this week, Police Chief William Lawrence said Wednesday.

Christopher McKissick, 29, of Orient and Briana Bonness, 24, and Desmond Craig, 23, both of Ellsworth, were summoned for criminal trespass, criminal mischief and attempted burglary. They are due in Lincoln District Court on Aug. 16, Lawrence said.

The three, who have lengthy criminal records for burglary and other such crimes, are being investigated by state and Ellsworth police for possible links to other burglaries, Lawrence said.

None of the arrests would have happened without the neighbor’s alertness.

“This is an example of a neighbor stepping up and making a call and possibly preventing a burglary,” Lawrence said Wednesday. “It is something we very much encourage.”

The incident began when the neighbor, whom Lawrence declined to identify, saw a pickup truck drive into the lot at Clay GMC Chevrolet, 470 Main St., at about 11 p.m. Sunday and heard what sounded like loud banging shortly thereafter, Lawrence said.

Officer Mark Fucile responded to the alert from the Penobscot Regional Communications Center in Bangor and was in the lot within minutes. He said he saw two men running from a pickup truck with a woman inside it, plus what he took to be burglar tools, Lawrence said.

The vehicle’s registration and other evidence helped him identify the two men, who turned themselves in to police early Monday after Fucile impounded the truck and state police Officer Barry Meserve and his trained tracking dog tried to find them, Lawrence said.

Anyone with information about other burglaries is encourage to call police at 794-8455. All calls will be kept confidential.
