Ryan to take chairmanship of Unum board

By Matt Wickenheiser, BDN Staff

Falmouth businessman William J. Ryan has been elected non-executive chairman of the board of directors at Unum Group, effective Sept. 30.

Ryan retired in 2009 as chairman of TD Banknorth, where he had previously been president, CEO and director. He is one of the owners of the Red Claws, a D League basketball team in Portland.

Ryan will succeed Jon S. Fossel, who is retiring as chairman of the board.

Unum, a disability insurance provider, employs roughly 10,000 people worldwide and just over 3,000 in Maine. It was formed from the 1998 merger of Portland-based Unum Corp. and Tennessee-based Provident Corp.
