One of Maine’s oldest and best-known retailers, L.L. Bean, has launched a mobile-commerce website for consumers with smartphones.
Smartphone users going to llbean.com will automatically be routed to the mobile site, which is formatted for the smaller screen. According to a release sent out Wednesday, shoppers can search, browse, purchase and read product ratings and reviews from any Internet-enabled mobile phone. Some of the site’s features include a store finder, L.L.Bean Visa Card coupon lookup, click to call customer service, ratings and reviews, e-mail sign up and complete product descriptions.
“We want to ensure L.L.Bean customers can shop with us however they chose and whenever they want whether that’s through our catalogs, website, retail stores and now with mobile,” said Steve Fuller, L.L.Bean’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer.
L.L. Bean’s online sales grew 29 percent in 2010 over 2009. 2010 was also the first year that online sales surpassed catalogue sales.
The site was built by mobile commerce technology provider Usablenet Inc., whose clients include Nestle, Aetna, jetBlue, Marriott, FedEx, Expedia, Lands End, Hilton and others.
L.L. Bean, based in Freeport, was founded in 1912.
