EDGARTOWN, Mass. — Authorities say a 34-year-old Massachusetts man drowned over the weekend as he and another swimmer struggled for help in the water off Martha’s Vineyard.
Michael Romm of Watertown was pronounced dead Saturday at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, where he was taken after the incident near Norton Point.
Authorities say rescue crews were called to the area Saturday afternoon on a report of Romm and a female swimmer in distress in the water. People in a private boat were able to pull them out before emergency crews arrived, but Romm went into cardiac arrest.
The 26-year-old female swimmer’s name was not released, and authorities say she was not injured.
Authorities say the area has sandbars and strong, shifting currents that can create treacherous swimming conditions.
