Hermon’s Petersen excels in USATF Youth Meet

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Hermon’s James Petersen won three medals at the USATF Youth Outdoor Track and Field National Championships over the weekend.

Petersen, 11, posted personal best times in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter events in the Midget Boys (ages 11-12) division, according to his dad Dan Petersen.

The Hermon Middle Schooler finished sixth in the 200 on Saturday with a time of 27.19 seconds. He competed in the 100 and 400 events Sunday. He finished the 100 meters with a time of 13.75, placing seventh. He was fifth in the 400, just missing his goal of finishing under a minute (1:00.63).

Petersen qualified for the finals in all three events he entered. The top eight receive medals.

He returns to Maine this week to compete in the Hershey State Meet at Cameron Stadium in Bangor on Thursday.

On Saturday, he’ll head to Troy, N.Y., to compete in the Region I Junior Olympic Meet, where he is already qualified for the 100, 200 and 400 sprint races.
