Hampden student receives citizenship award

Michael Townsend (center) of Hampden is welcomed to the State House on June 28 by state Sen. Debra Plowman (left) and state Rep. Andre Cushing, both of Hampden. A student at Reeds Brook Middle School in Hampden, Townsend won the Secretary of State’s Eighth-Grade Citizenship Award. The award is given to eighth-grade students who have shown civic awareness, scholastic achievement and community service. The youth was was honored with the mark of distinction for his volunteer service with those who are mentally disabled, as well as his work as a member of his school’s civil rights team, which is supporting a soldier in Afghanistan and a staff member battling cancer. The legislators said they were delighted to have the opportunity to welcome him to the Capitol in Augusta.
