Red Cross plans blood drives in Hancock, Waldo and Washington counties


ELLSWORTH, Maine — The American Red Cross, Northern New England Blood Services Region will hold blood drives in the following areas:

Northeast Harbor,  1-6 p.m. July 7, Mount Desert Elementary School.

Stonington, 1-6 p.m. July 7, Island Community Center.

Ellsworth, 1-6 p.m. July 8, St. Josephs Church.

Ellsworth, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. July 23, Church of Life and Praise.

Ellsworth, 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. July 25, Friendly’s restaurant.

Ellsworth, 1-6 p.m. July 29, Friend and Friend.

Stockton Spring, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. July 9, Stockton Springs Elementary School.

Belfast, noon-6 p.m. July 22, Belfast Masonic Lodge.

Invasive plant paddle training program offered in Jefferson

JEFFERSON, Maine — All are invited to an invasive plant paddle training program with the Damariscotta Lake Watershed Association from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 9, at Wilt and Judy Jones’ house at 27 High View Road, which is off Route 213-Bunker Hill Road a mile north of the intersection of Routes 215 and 213. Through this training, individuals will learn how to complete an invasive plant survey and how to rule out the presence of invasive aquatic plants. Catching invasive aquatic plants early is essential to protecting your favorite water body.

Much of the training will take place on the water. Please bring your own canoe or kayak, paddles, PFD and other gear to keep you comfortable. Damariscotta Lake Watershed Association to meet July 17

JEFFERSON, Maine — Executive director of the Natural Resources Council of Maine Lisa Pohlmann will be the keynote speaker at the Damariscotta Lake Watershed Association’s 46th annual meeting at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 17, at the Willow Grange in Jefferson.

During Pohlmann’s talk, titled “Protecting Maine’s Environment at the Legislature,” she will discuss the importance of strong safeguards for Maine’s land, air, wildlife and water. She will describe NRCM’s work over the last 50 years to ensure such protections and will specifically discuss the recent legislative session and the potential implications for Maine’s environment. Lisa will talk about the role Maine citizens have in the legislative process and also share ways groups such as the Damariscotta Lake Watershed Association can get involved to advance their own mission.

There will also be a brief overview of DLWA programs before a potluck dinner. Please bring a dish to share. The public is welcome to attend. For more information, call 549-3836 or email

Prospect center to hold benefit bean supper

PROSPECT, Maine — The Prospect Community Center will be holding a baked bean and casserole supper from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at the Prospect Community Center Dining Room. Menu includes beans, hot dogs, casseroles, salads and desserts. Price is $6 for adults and $2 for children under 12. All proceeds benefit building maintenance an community projects. All are welcome.
