BELFAST, Maine — A local woman who reportedly was driving a minivan while intoxicated was arrested Wednesday evening in connection with a three-car accident on Route 52.

Elizabeth H. Hyde, 25, told police that her phone rang while she was approaching the Route 1 intersection in a borrowed 2000 Dodge van. While she was rummaging to pick up the phone, she drove into a line of cars that was stopped for a red light, causing a chain reaction crash that left the two cars in front of her damaged and one person suffering from a possible neck injury.

Officers who arrived at the crash scene said that Hyde was somewhat argumentative and they could smell alcohol on her.

She was arrested at the scene, where it took two police officers to put her in handcuffs to take her to Waldo County Jail to undergo a blood-alcohol test.

Hyde allegedly tested at 0.34 percent blood-alcohol content, which is more than four times the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

She was charged with operating a motor vehicle without a license and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence and was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, where she is being held on $400 cash bail.

Her borrowed van had about $1,000 in damage.

The first car that was hit, a 2010 Honda SUV, was driven by Sonya Lewis, 42, of Belfast. She had an 11-year-old boy riding with her. No one in that vehicle reported injuries, but the vehicle received about $1,500 in damage.

The force of the collision with Hyde’s minivan caused the Honda to hit the bumper of a third car, a 2005 Toyota Prius driven by Amy Arnett, 41, of Belfast. Arnett complained of neck pain and also had a passenger, a 9-year-old boy. Her car had about $3,000 in damage.

Belfast Ambulance and Rescue went to the crash scene but apparently did not need to take anyone to the hospital.

Police said they were able to route traffic around the accident site and the road did not need to be closed.

Hyde is scheduled to appear Tuesday, Aug. 9, in Belfast District Court.
