Ellsworth Public Library announces July events

ELLSWORTH, Maine —The Ellsworth Public Library will host the following summer library events for the month of July:

• Storytime (4 and 5 years old), 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

• Teen Summer Reading Program, 9 a.m. Wednesdays.

• Laptime (recommended for birth to 24 months), 10 a.m. Fridays.

Bring Nature Home lecture planned at College of the Atlantic

BAR HARBOR, Maine —The College of the Atlantic and the Beatrix Farrand Society will present Dr. Douglas Tallamy, author of “Bring Nature Home,” at a free lecture 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, in the Thomas S. Gates Jr. Community Center at College of the Atlantic.

Tallamy will use illustrations from his research and experience in natural landscaping.

Copies of “Bringing Nature Home” will be available for purchase and signing. Registration is encouraged. For information or to register, call 288-0237.

Belfast Boat Building Challenge scheduled

BELFAST, Maine —The National Boat Building Challenge, sponsored by the Belfast Rotary Club, will take place during the Belfast Harbor Fest at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at Steamboat Landing.

The challenge involves two-person teams building a 12-foot wooden skiff in under four hours, followed by a rowing race. Teams are judged on how quickly they complete construction, the quality of the craftsmanship and their speed on the water in the two-man relay rowing race.

For the $150 entry fee, each team receives plans and building materials, a workspace and competes for a $300 first-place prize, $150 for second place and a $50 gift certificate for third place. Teams provide their own tools, work tables and oars, which can be made beforehand.

On Sunday, there will be a Habitat Lobster Gala from noon to 3 p.m. Tickets are $25 for the fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity of Waldo County and may be obtained by calling 338-2344.
