Collin Downs of Lincolnville and Camden Hills Regional High School of Rockport is one of 55 new members of the Army football program who were welcomed to the West Point, N.Y., campus Monday by head coach Rich Ellerson for the Black Knights’ annual Reception Day.
Downs, who helped Camden Hills gain an Eastern Class B playoff berth last fall, is one of 25 members of the Army Class of 2015 coming directly from the high school ranks.
A 6-foot-2, 205-pound quarterback, Downs was a three-year captain at Camden Hills who earned all-Pine Tree Conference Class B recognition as a junior and a senior while playing under his father, Windjammers’ head coach Linwood Downs.
Downs also starred in track and field while at Camden Hills.
Twenty-five states from all geographic locations are represented in Army’s 2011 recruiting class. The signees are split almost equally between offense and defense. Twenty-six players are slated for the offensive side of the ball, 28 are currently assigned to the defense and one player will be utilized on special teams.
Downs is one of four quarterbacks listed in Army’s incoming first-year class.
The Black Knights begin their 122nd season on Sept. 3 at Northern Illinois. Army makes it 2011 home debut the following week when it hosts San Diego State.
