Lincoln seeks volunteer medics for Homecoming

LINCOLN, Maine — Anyone from an emergency medical technician to a full-fledged physician is invited to help Lincoln firefighters maintain the public’s health during the town’s homecoming celebration next month, Fire Chief Phil Dawson said Tuesday.

Dawson is seeking volunteer medical personnel to stand by during the Homecoming fireworks show and other happenings during the four-day annual town event next month.

“We will take anybody throughout the day,” Dawson said Tuesday. “In the past, we have had doctors, physician’s assistants, and RNs during the parade, EMS people from Mattawamkeag and Lee. We are preparing for the event and looking for assistance from anyone willing to give us a hand.”

This year’s Lincoln Homecoming Festival is scheduled for July 21-24. The homecoming, which has gone by several names over the years, typically attracts people from as far away as Alaska. It will feature a fireworks show, parade, dances, barbecues, a road race, ATV runs, auctions, car shows and live music.

It is a movable feast, taking place at Cobb Field, downtown, Veterans Square, Lincoln Memorial Library and Prince Thomas Park, among other sites, and helps celebrate Lincoln history while giving town businesses a boost.

The festival typically jams streets, hotels and motels, crowds sidewalks on Main Street with foot traffic and fills restaurants around town. The event is Lincoln’s largest of the year. It usually costs slightly less than its budget, town officials said. As many as 75 volunteers help make homecoming happen, along with about 50 vendors selling their goods.

Last year, local firefighters and ambulances from Penobscot Valley Hospital of Lincoln received about 14 medical calls during homecoming, ranging from heart attacks to heat stroke to diabetic reactions, Dawson said.

Anyone interested in volunteering to help may call Dawson at 794-2610, he said.
