CINCINNATI — The police chief of Portland, Maine, has been selected to head Cincinnati’s police department.

Cincinnati City Manager Milton Dohoney announced Tuesday that James Craig will replace former Cincinnati Chief Tom Streicher, who retired in March.

Craig will be the city’s first black police chief, and officials say he will be Cincinnati’s first chief chosen from outside the department. Voters approved a ballot issue allowing the outside hiring of chiefs and assistant chiefs after race riots in 2001. The change was promoted as a way to change the culture of the police department.

A screening committee considered 45 candidates from around the country.
