Noteworthy, June 29 2011: Homeless shelter raises $43,000, Turkey with a Teacher Study Tours

Bangor, Maine — The Bangor Area Homeless Shelter reports that more than 1,300 people walked to Bangor from four sites on April 9 to show support for the shelter during the BAHS annual Hike for the Homeless.

Walkers gathered at Hampden Academy, the Cianchette Building in Brewer, Veazie Community School and Husson University in Bangor and completed their hike at the Bangor Waterfront.

The event, coordinated by Laura Cushing, raised more than $43,000 for the shelter.

BAHS is open 24-7 and provides both overnight shelter and a day program for the homeless in our community.

Three Maine teachers left on June 19 for Turkey with the Teacher Study Tours program organized and sponsored by the Turkish Cultural Foundation in cooperation with the World Affairs Council of America.

Traveling with a group of 57 middle and high school teachers are James Flanagan of Brunswick High School, Bruno Yomoah of Deering High School and Shawna Dunn of Gorham High School.

Selected by the World Affairs Council of Maine, the teachers attended multiple educational sessions before being chosen for the trip and, upon their return from the 14-day tour, will work with the WACM to develop cultural and educational programs that introduce Turkey to the local community and in their classrooms.

PORTLAND, Maine — The Maine Women’s Policy Center met recently at the Wishcamper Center of the Muskie School of Public Service to honor contributors whose generosity makes possible their work to increase opportunities for women and girls.

In special recognition of her efforts to increase the economic standing of women in Maine and throughout the country, the annual Liz Crandall Leadership Award was presented to Annie Houle of South Portland.

As National Director of Campus and Community Initiatives for the WAGE Project, Annie travels the country providing training and guidance for college students and for community groups working to eliminate the wage gap through effective salary negotiation.

Annie has taught more than 400 facilitators to train women to negotiate for fair salaries and equal pay in programs from Maine to Florida and beyond.

BANGOR, Maine — Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems announced that its 24th annual CMNH Telethon broadcast live on WABI-TV5 from the Bangor Mall was a huge success, raising more than $530,000.

Featuring children and families who have benefited from services at the hospitals in our region which are supported by CMNH, the event also recognized the generosity and dedication of local businesses and organizations that support CMNH throughout the year.

“Seeing the Miracle Families, health care providers, employees of local businesses and volunteers all come together to support CMNH gives me great pride,” said Michael Crowley, president and chief philanthropy officer of Healthcare Charities. “Their commitment to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals of EMHS has enhanced health care for countless children in our region.”

Kohl’s Department Stores’ Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program has announced 10 Mainers are among nearly 2,200 young volunteers nationwide who will receive a $50 gift card and recognition certificate for having made a difference in their communities.

State winners qualify for a $1,000 regional scholarship for postsecondary education to be awarded in July and, of more than 200 regional winners, 10 national winners each will receive a total of $10,000 in scholarships and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit on each national winner’s behalf.

The Maine winners are Sydney Pepin, 12, Alfred; Tommy Hosmer, 10, Bangor; Kori Coro, 15, Jackman; Taylor Wotton, 12, Lincoln; Mackenzie Darling, 12, Livermore; Alexandria Thomas, 18, Pittston; Emily Buell, 17, Poland; Julia Pasquali, 14, Portland; Drew Landry, 17, Saco; and Ausashia Day, 12, West Newfield.
