AUGUSTA, Maine — A Maine congressman says he is disappointed with the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling striking down a provision of Arizona’s campaign financing system that gives extra cash to publicly funded candidates who face privately funded rivals and independent groups.
Democratic Rep. Mike Michaud says there’s little question Monday’s decision on Arizona’s statute will have an adverse effect on Maine’s clean election system. Michaud says Maine voters supported the clean elections system, which has a high participation rate and has worked well for years.
Maine Citizens for Clean Elections says the decision was disappointing but expected.
The activist group’s Alison Smith says Maine’s lawmakers were prepared for the ruling and are considering a bill that provides a public review of it so adjustments can be made in Maine law before the 2012 elections.
