Exchange visitor

ROCKLAND — Penobscot School, 28 Gay St., is inaugurating an exchange visitor program this July. The first exchange visitor is Mario Ramos Villa of Puebla, Mexico. Ramos taught Spanish at the school from 2002 to 2003.

Ramos will be here for the month of July. He will teach foreign language courses, including two Espanol Estival summer Spanish courses beginning July 7 and July 11 respectively.  Both are targeted to intermediate and early intermediate Spanish speakers.

There will be a welcome reception for Ramos at the school at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 6. All are invited.

Scholarship contestant

BELFAST — Elaine Gray, a recent graduate of Belfast Area High School,  worked with Habitat for Humanity in Mobile, Ala., on June 16, helping to educate children in the Mobile area about the importance of suitable housing. Gray is in Mobile participating in the 54th Distinguished Young Women National Finals, a scholarship program that will award more than $140,000 in cash scholarships to its participants June 23-25.

Gray volunteered her time as part of the Be Your Best Self Day sponsored by the Junior League of Mobile. She and 15 of her fellow state representatives spent the morning painting bird houses, interacting with the children and teaching them about giving back to their communities while the remaining participants volunteered at other sites around the city.

As a participant in the 54th Distinguished Young Women National Finals, Gray is eligible for a $1,000 Be Your Best Self scholarship.

Hutchinson Center

BELFAST — Book artist Tara Law will offer Digital Design, Vector- and Pixel-based Illustration 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, Aug 8-13 at the Hutchinson Center. Artwork by Law will be on display there through Saturday, Aug. 30.

Law also will offer a class in Book Design 12:30-4 p.m. starting Monday, Aug 29.

BELFAST — The Hutchinson Center will offer these classes in June and July:

• Nature Drawing, starting July 5.

• Introduction to Creative Writing, starting July 5.

• African-American Literature, starting July 5.

• Advanced Topics in French, starting July 5.

• Special Topics in Spanish, starting July 11.

• Topics in Spanish, starting July 18.

August classes scheduled are:

• Digital Design, Aug. 8-12.

• Sustainable/Nonviolent Communication, Aug.8-12.

• Behavior Management, Aug.8-19.

• Introduction to Web Design, Aug. 15-19
