NORTHPORT, Maine — Web-based medical billing company athenahealth has purchased a 380-acre oceanside resort here for $7.7 million, a spokesperson for the firm announced Friday.
Point Lookout in Northport was for sale for months before athenahealth decided to buy the property for conferences and events with clients. The 40,000 square feet of conference rooms also will be used to train employees and clients.
The company has about 300 employees at its Belfast bureau, and according to spokesperson John Hallock, the Maine office has been expanding rapidly since it opened in 2008.
“Increasingly our Maine operation is playing a much larger role in helping our clients,” he said.
Athenahealth provides medical billing and management services to more than 27,000 medical providers nationwide, according to the company’s website.
The Belfast branch runs the operations for the company, including processing claims for clients, posting remittances and doing follow-up work to track health payments. About a third of the Maine team also works in customer support, according to David Tassoni, athenahealth senior vice president of operations.
The company also has branches in Massachusetts and Georgia.
According to David Hendrix, Point Lookout’s general manager, the facility has 106 cabins, oceanfront property, tennis courts, a fitness facility, bowling alleys and more.
The resort employs about 50 people through its management agency, Pyramid. Athenahealth will retain Pyramid to run the property, so Point Lookout’s employees likely will not lose their jobs.
The facility will continue to be open to the public for events and accommodations to cover the costs of owning the facility.
