CHERRYFIELD and LEVANT – Liston Edward Grant passed away peacefully June 21, 2011, at a Bangor hospital with his family by his side. He was born July 9, 1926, in Cherryfield, son of Bessie J. and Adfer W. Grant Sr.
Liston graduated from Cherryfield Academy in 1943. He joined the Army in November 1944, and served at Fort Dix as a clerk typist until his discharge in August 1946. After his discharge, he attended barber school in Lewiston. Liston married Doris Smith, in October 1952 and raised two daughters while working as a barber, bookkeeper and town manager before his retirement. After retirement, Liston spent many winters in Florida and enjoyed missing the Maine winters. At the time of his death he was a member of South Levant Baptist Church. Liston was a very gifted pianist having the ability to play by ear and during his adult life served his Lord and Savior until the time of his death as a pianist and organist for the various churches that he attended. In the last few years, he also enjoyed playing for his many friends at Ross Manor and Winterberry Heights. He also enjoyed being part of various quartets, choirs and singing groups.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; his two daughters, Cynthia Orton and her husband, Paul, of Hermon, and Cheryl Drake and her husband, Larry, of Bangor; two grandsons, Shannon Hall of Portland and Christopher Hall of Augusta; two great-grandsons, Taylor Scott of Westbrook and Oliver Gilbert-Hall of Augusta; a cousin, Naomi Naff of Massachusetts, many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and many friends with whom he has shared wonderful times with both here in Maine and in Florida. He was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Rena Tenan and Flossie Morse; brothers, Adfer Grant Jr. and Henry Grant; nieces, nephews, cousins and brothers-in-law.
A memorial service to celebrate Liston’s life will be held 2 p.m. June 26 at First Baptist Church of Cherryfield, with a reception immediately after.
Another memorial service will be held 2 p.m. July 3 at South Levant Baptist Church with a reception immediately after.
