SAD 23 to hold district budget meeting


CARMEL, Maine — The SAD 23 board of directors district budget meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, at Caravel Middle School in Carmel. The budget validation referendum polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 30, to validate the results of the meeting. SAD 23 consists of the towns of Carmel and Levant. Abbot Historical Society public meeting and patriots exhibit planned

ABBOT, Maine — The Abbot Historical Society invites the public to a “Patriots Of Abbot” exhibit at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, at the Abbot Town Hall. The program will cover patriots from 1838 to the present. There will be exhibits and lots of stories. Sharing of mementos, photos and stories from ancestors to present day heroes is encouraged. Author of ‘Ghosts of Acadia’ to talk in Orono

ORONO, Maine — Author Marcus LiBrizzi will discuss his latest book, “Ghosts of Acadia,” as well as his popular previous collection, “Dark Woods, Chill Waters: Ghost Tales from Down East Maine,” at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, at Dirigo Pines in Orono. “Ghosts of Acadia” is the first book of ghost stories to feature Mount Desert Island. Subjects of the tales include fatal mansions, death caves, ghost ships, a haunted object, a cursed lighthouse and lots of vengeful phantoms. The event is free and open to the public. Butterfly count scheduled for Fields Pond

HOLDEN, Maine — Help count butterflies for the North American Butterfly Count at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 2, at Fields Pond in Holden. Counts are held nationwide, and the Fields Pond Butterfly Count supplies important data about declines or increases of butterfly populations. Anyone interested in counting and identifying butterflies on that date elsewhere within the count circle, call Pat Snyder at 567-3137 or The circle is 7.5 mile radius centered on Fields Pond Audubon Center. The cost is $3 per person, free for children, with proceeds going to the North American Butterfly Count.

Medicinal plants focus of walk in Holden

HOLDEN, Maine — Come identify and learn about local Maine medicinal plants. Join Fields Pond Audubon for a medicinal plant identification walk. Then come indoors to hand blend your own medicinal teas made from local Maine plants from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at Fields Pond in Holden. The cost is $25 for members and $30 for nonmembers.
