Comedy Improv. teacher offers free ‘Comedy Games’ workshop for ArtWalk Night

BANGOR, Maine — Kathleen Lake, certified life coach, comedy improv teacher and performer, will offer a free Comedy Games workshop this Friday night, June 24, downtown in conjunction with the ArtWalk. Comedy Games are easy, fun, no-pressure improvisation experiences designed for groups to laugh together and bond.

“These games require no experience at all. They rely as much on having people there to watch and laugh as they do having people to play,” said Lake. Comedy Games may consist of big groups telling stories a word at a time, several people trying to all be part of the same body, one person dubbing in words for another, a party where all the guests have lisps or people pretending to speak in a foreign language.

Lake said helping people laugh and try something new without any pressure is a big part of her life coaching practice. She draws on her experience teaching comedy, drama and public speaking over more than twenty years, as well as the principles of positive psychology. Positive psychology teaches people to fall back on their inner strengths and positive energy in times of stress.

“Laughter is a huge part of that. It’s like food. You have to have it! ” she said. “When you’re in a state of happiness, you bring happiness to the world.”

The Comedy Games will start at 8 p.m., downstairs at 33 Main St., next door to Deja Vu and directly across the street from Paddy Murphy’s Pub. The public is invited to walk in at any time to watch or to play. People can come and go as they like, Kathleen says. “If you’ve ever felt a secret desire to be there at ‘Whose Line is It Anyway?,’ this is your chance,” she said. Friday’s Comedy Games will kick off a summer series of comedy workshops.
