Replicas of Nina, Pinta arrive in Portland Harbor

The Associated Press

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Replicas of two of history’s best-known sailing ships are opening to the public in Maine’s largest port.

Copies of the Nina and the Pinta, two of the ships that Christopher Columbus sailed across the Atlantic in 1492, are arriving Wednesday at the South Port Marine in South Portland.

The ships will be open for self-guided walking tours beginning Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. until their departure next Tuesday.

The ships are owned by the Columbus Foundation, based in the British Virgin Islands, which sails the ships around the country as floating museums.
