PROSPECT, Maine — A millworker escaped major injury early Tuesday morning in an accident that destroyed his pickup truck.

Matthew S. Cole, 25, of Swanville told police that he fell asleep at the wheel just before 6 a.m. after working an overnight shift at Verso Paper Corp.’s Bucksport mill. His 2007 GMC truck left the pavement on Fort Knox Road in Prospect and careened into a large ash tree, said Chief Deputy Robert Keating of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

The truck then spun around and crashed into another tree.

Police at the accident scene took photographs of the truck, which looked to be largely demolished by the impacts.

Cole was checked at the scene by a crew from the Stockton Springs Ambulance Service but was not taken to a hospital, Keating said.

Officers estimated his truck had $12,000 in damage.
