Penquis coordinator earns state honor

BANGOR, Maine — Beverly Larochelle, volunteer coordinator for Penquis, received the 2011 Governor’s Service Award for Excellence in Volunteer Administration. Larochelle was honored at the Maine Capitol Building Hall of Flags in Augusta at the Governor’s Awards for Service and Volunteerism.

For the past 24 years, the awards have celebrated and recognized the exemplary work of Maine’s most dedicated citizens. This award program, administered jointly by the Maine Commission for Community Service and the governor’s office, recognizes and honors the valuable contribution of Maine’s extraordinary citizens in the hopes of inspiring others to follow their example.

Larochelle is responsible for the recruiting, training and scheduling of volunteer drivers for the Penquis Lynx Transportation program.

“With over 1,100 trips daily, our Lynx volunteer drivers provide a vital service to people in both Penobscot and Piscataquis counties,” said Larochelle.

She was nominated by her supervisor, Jean Pimental, Lynx division manager. Pimental noted that since being hired for the volunteer coordinator position in 2001, Larochelle has expanded the volunteer base from around 55 drivers to a total of 141 drivers. When hired, she was asked to try to get the driver count up to 100. She has since far exceeded that expectation and continues to recruit drivers on a regular basis.

“Her passion for her work is reflected in the way she runs the program. She treats each driver with respect and is constantly looking for ways to show them that they are truly appreciated for the work they do,” said Pimental.

“My personal mission is to love others, encourage them and help them reach their potential through service,” said Larochelle.

“If it were not for all the work Beverly puts into her job, we would not be able to transport the number of people we do each day, and without Beverly’s untiring effort, we would never have the number of volunteers that she has recruited.”
