Thomaston plans 4th of July celebration

By Shari Closter, Special to the BDN

Thomaston is in the midst of planning its traditional, old-fashioned Fourth of July Celebration, which will be held Monday, July 4. The day’s events start early with a pancake breakfast at the Masonic Hall. Other activities include a craft tent, a pet show, parade, chicken barbecue, food and vendor booths, motorcycle show, face painting, games for children, horseshoe tournament, music, and a fireworks grand finale.

At 11 a.m. the parade will start at Booker Street and head down Main Street through the town center. The parade theme for 2011 is “G.V.H.S Yearbooks.”

Thomaston Fourth of July committee members currently are soliciting raffle prizes and donations to support this traditional celebration. Local businesses are collecting donations in counter-top ‘firecracker’ containers, and area businesses and committee members are selling raffle tickets in advance of the event. Tickets are $10 for 13, $5 for six or $1 each. The drawing will be in the evening, and the band will announce the winners between song sets. The committee will notify absent winners. Raffle tickets may be purchased at the committee booth during festivities.

Raffle prizes include an overnight stay from Hampton Inn & Suites; 10 lobster-roll gift certificates from Pik-Quik; a pair of coach-class, round-trip tickets from Maine Eastern Railroad; a family season pass to Owls Head Transportation Museum; $50 gift certificates from The Green Thumb and Eastern Tire Service; a Summer Fun Pack from Key Bank; gift certificate for four 1-pound lobsters from Jess’s Market; a hand-painted tote bag from Uptown Studio; $25 gift certificates from Thomaston Grocery, Athens Pizzeria, Park Street Grille, The Personal Bookshop and Seagull Cottage; $15 gift certificate from Waterworks Pub; $10 gift certificate from Hole in the Wall Bagels; and two $5 gift certificates from F&A’s Market.

Place donations in ‘firecracker’ donation containers at Pik-Quik, Thomaston Grocery, Camden National Bank, Jess’s Market, The Keag Store and more. Or send donations payable to Thomaston Fourth of July Committee to P.O. Box 149, Thomaston, ME 04861. Contact Julie Russo, committee chairwoman, at 354-8763 to participate with raffle items or sponsorships.

The committee also is seeking volunteers to help with the celebration in decorating, parade staging and monitoring, parade banner carriers, flag sellers, committee booth and ticket sales, clean-up detail, and more.
