FARMINGTON, Maine — Farmers say Maine’s strawberry season is right on time and farms with pick-your-own operations in the western part of the state expected to open by June 25.

Last year’s season started about two weeks earlier than usual because of an unseasonably early spring. This year, it appears the crop is back on its normal schedule.

David Handley of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension tells the Lewiston Sun Journal the number of berries, size and quality look good.

He estimated there are approximately 100 commercial strawberry growers in Maine who have about 800 acres in production.
