Astronaut Ball in Bangor to celebrate 25 years of Challenger Center

BANGOR, Maine — In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Challenger Center for Space Science Education, the Challenger Learning Center of Maine is holding its fourth annual Astronauts Ball from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, June 24, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bangor. A raffle grand prize and NASA photo exhibit round out the night. Admission price for the evening is $75 per person and may be reserved by calling 990-2900 or email info@clcofme.org. Proceeds from the ball benefit the Challenger Learning Center of Maine.

Quilt raffle to raise funds for home heating assistance

BANGOR, Maine — The Justice and Charity Commission of Saint Paul the Apostle Parish is sponsoring a quilt raffle to raise funds to help those who need assistance to heat their homes in the winter months. Raffle tickets may be purchased at the Parish office, 207 York St. in Bangor. The winning ticket will be drawn on Sunday, June 19.

Planned power outage slated in Lakeview Plantation, Brownville

Doctor from Maine presented NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout Award

BANGOR, Maine — Dr. Wellington Estey, son of Lionel and Edith Lord of Bangor was presented the NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout Award at the Central Florida Council recognition banquet on June 10 in Orlando, Florida. This is a first-time award to Eagle Scouts who have demonstrated outstanding achievement at the local, state or regional level.

Estey has been affiliated with the Scouts before and after graduating from high school in Oakland, Maine. His affiliation with the Scouts continued during his career as a naval reserve officer and college administrator. He has served in numerous leadership positions including being a Boy Scouts of America council board member.

Estey has been recognized with numerous awards, designed military and Boy Scouts of America patches and created a forest service partnership in Florida which resulted in 300 Scouts completing conservation merit badges and getting 60,000 trees planted at the Ocala National Forest.

Estey retired as a naval reserve captain with 40 years of service in 2004 and as vice president of Lake Sumter Community College in Leesburg, Florida, in 2008. He and his wife Dora Mae currently live in Mount Dora, Florida.

Hampden artists’ exhibit reception set June 24

HAMPDEN, Maine — The Hampden Garden Club area artists exhibit reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 24, at historic Harmony Hall, 24 Kennebec Road in Hampden. The show will continue 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 25. Participating artists are Kathy Clegg, Verla Lucas, Bobbie Alpander, Norman Stern, Laura Tasheiko, Miles Grindle, Faye Ivers, Charlene Brooks, Netia Yates and Katelyn Lemelin. Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine gets $5,000 grant

BANGOR, Maine — The Directors of the Maine Community Foundation have approved a grant of $5,000 for the Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine in Bangor. The award is a one-year sustainability coordinator position to expand and strengthen volunteer involvement in fundraising efforts and center activities through recruitment, training and documentation for long-term sustainability. Bangor Hydro plans service interruption in Brewer June 19

BREWER, Maine – Bangor Hydro-Electric Company has announced a planned interruption in electric service from 6 to 9 a.m. Sunday, June 19, for residents in Penobscot Riverview Apartments and selected customers on Penobscot Street and Brick Street.
