Belfast police say young peddler may be casing homes

BELFAST, Maine — A young man who apparently is going door-to-door to ask for money has piqued the curiosity of local law enforcement agents.

Three residents in three days have called the Belfast Police Department to alert them that a man has come to their door asking for money, said Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham. The bearded, dark-haired man in his 20s has told two residents that he needs the money to help his sister, whose house has burned down. He told the third complainant that his family’s house burned down.

“We want anybody approached to call,” Cunningham said.

Police are worried that he might be casing neighborhoods to determine when people are home, as a precursor to a crime such as burglary.

Police are asking people who have been approached by this man to call the Belfast Police Department at 338-5255.
