Portland sex offender, 69, gets 4 years for visiting restricted area

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — A 69-year-old sex offender is going to prison for four years for violating his probation by visiting a section of Portland where he targeted three homeless sexual assault victims.

Frank Lapomarda was sentenced Tuesday in Cumberland County Superior Court.

Deputy District Attorney Meg Elam called the area where Lapomarda spent nine minutes in February, a “zone of danger.”

Conditions of Lapomarda’s probation prohibited him from the area bordered by Congress Street, Forest Avenue, Marginal Way and Franklin Street.

Police say an officer spotted Lapomarda “lurking” and “pacing” in a post office frequently used by transients to use pay phones and to escape bad weather.

In court, Lapomarda said he didn’t do any of the “things people are saying.”
