Bangor Public Library summer reading program

BANGOR, Maine — Experience globe-trotting adventures when you “book” a trip with Bangor Public Library’s summer reading program. The reading with take place every Wednesday, June 22-Aug. 5, at the Bangor Public Library. The program is open to young people from birth through fifth grade. Registration begins June 22. Bangor Library teen program

BANGOR, Maine — The Bangor Public Library asks teens to enter the library’s teen photo contest. This year’s teen reading theme, “You are Here” should be the subject of the photo.

Young adults are also invited to write a review from reading a book or magazine or attend a teen program. Give the library the review to share with others and you might win a gift certificate from a weekly drawing.

Young adults are also invited to make a film from reading a classic novel. Film the story in 90 seconds. Check online for rules and suggestions. The film winner will be announced Friday, Aug. 5. For more information, call 947-8336, ext. 111.

Basic dog obedience school

GUILFORD, Maine — Russell & Cynthia Scott will hold a 5-week basic dog obedience class at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 19, at Fresh Air Dogs, 251 Wharff Road in Guilford.

This class will give dog owners the skills needed to teach their dogs to heel on a loose leash, automatic sit, sit-stay, down, down-stay, stand for examination, recall and finish and transitioning to off-leash. Dog owners will also learn how to handle behavioral problems like jumping.

Michaud community staff hours

Somerset County chicken dinner

SKOWHEGAN, Maine — The Somerset County Republican will hold its annual chicken BBQ dinner at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at Steeves’ Sugar Shack, 163 Rowe Road in Skowhegan. The social hour begins at 5:30 p.m.

The meal will be prepared by the Skowhegan Republican Committee and include a half-chicken, coleslaw, rolls, potato chips, pie and beverages. The cost is $10 per person.

Rosscare antique appraisal show

ORONO, Maine — Rosscare Healthcare Charities and Dirigo Pines is hosting an Antique Appraisal Show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at Dirigo Pines Retirement Community in Orono. All proceeds will benefit Rosscare’s Lifeline Help Button program.

The show features licensed qualified auctioneer Bruce A. Buxton and his staff. Appraisals are $10 for one items, $18 for two items and $25 for three items. The public is invited to bring items to be appraised to the event and more information is available by calling Steve Bowler at 866-3400 or Healthcare Charities at 973-5055. No items will be bought or sold at this event.

The Lifeline program, which allows many people to stay in their homes longer and more safely, provides services to more than 800 elderly and disabled residents in the area who, should they experience an emergency, can summon help by pressing the help button on the Lifeline unit.
