MACHIAS, Maine — Two incumbent selectmen were re-elected Tuesday in what town officials called a very good turnout for a nonreferendum election.

Chairman of the Board of Selectmen Aubrey Carter was re-elected to a  three-year term with 162 votes. Cony Upton was also re-elected to a three-year term as selectman with 184. They defeated challenger Stephen Smith who obtained 109 votes.

Gerard NiCastro was re-elected to the Machias School Committee with 203 votes and a second open seat was filled by a write-in candidate, Teresa Sadler, who got 20 write-in votes.

Voters also accepted the school budget, recently approved by voters, by a vote of 168 yes to 79 no.

The annual town meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Machias Memorial High School gymnasium.
