BELFAST, Maine — A local man was still in jail Tuesday after allegedly kidnapping, terrorizing and assaulting his former girlfriend over the weekend.

Paul Jameson, 49, who lives on High Street, was arrested Monday afternoon after the victim told police about what reportedly had happened.

The two, who had been romantic partners in the past but were estranged, met on Saturday when Jameson picked her up in his vehicle, according to Belfast Police Chief Jeff Trafton. They went for a ride, but at one point when she tried to get out of the vehicle, he allegedly tackled her.

“He jumped out and pinned her down,” Trafton said.

Jameson also threatened to kill her, according to the chief.

Eventually, the situation calmed down and he dropped her off at her home. But on Monday, he reportedly threatened her life again and her friends convinced her to speak to the police.

“Basically, he gave her three choices: they reconcile, she leaves town, or he kills her,” Trafton said.

Police went with a fourth option, which was to arrest Jameson on Monday afternoon and charge him with kidnapping, domestic violence terrorizing and domestic violence assault.

He remained at Waldo County Jail on Tuesday afternoon, where he is being held on $2,000 cash bail.
