Promoter of Larry Bird statue won’t get to make it

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — A sculptor who has worked for years to promote plans for a statue of Larry Bird at Indiana State University says it looks like he won’t have the chance to make it.

Vigo County sculptor Bill Wolfe says the founder of the Larry Legend Foundation told him a donor was willing to fund the project, but insisted on another artist.

Wolfe tells the Tribune-Star the news is devastating and that is knocked him for a loop.

The Larry Legend Foundation is trying to raise at least $135,000 to honor the former Indiana State and Boston Celtics star with an annual scholarship and a statue at least 13 feet tall outside the school’s Hulman Center arena.

Wolfe’s works include sculptures at Indiana State and the Vigo County Courthouse in Terre Haute.
